Costs and cover

Your care budget

# A useful quote has room for the whole bill.

Ask for a quote that shows what each payment covers. Keep the first bill and the regular bill side by side.

Use these as headings for a written quote, not as a price list.

Part of the bill

Ask for this in writing

Care visit

The charge for the care review, including what happens if no medicine is prescribed.

Medicine

The product name, what each fill supplies and the charge for it.

Tests

The proposed test list, with a separate charge beside each test.

Ongoing care

The regular fee, what it includes and how to cancel.

Delivery and supplies

Whether these have separate charges.

## Check whether the advertised price uses insurance or cash

As of September 2026, a branded weight-loss drug’s list price, cash price, discount price and insured payment could be different amounts.

List price means the maker’s published figure.

A cash price is paid from your own money. Your insurance is not used for that purchase.

A copay is the share of a bill you pay when insurance covers part of the cost.

In September 2026, drug makers offered cash prices mostly around $149–$499 a month for weight-loss and diabetes medicines such as Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound and Mounjaro.

In September 2026, some Zepbound offers charged more if the next refill came over 45 days following delivery of the previous supply.

What counted as a month’s supply also varied by product in the September 2026 offers.

Those are medicine figures, not quotes for a Tampa visit. Ask for a quote for your proposed care.

Some online weight-care memberships advertised in September 2026 billed care and medicine separately.

Ask whether an advertised fee covers the drug itself. Then ask for the regular charge after any opening offer.

## Give the health plan the exact medicine and reason for use

Medicare’s prescription-drug insurance is called Part D. In September 2026, it still excluded medicines used for weight loss.

In September 2026, Part D could pay for a drug used for another medically accepted reason, such as diabetes. Each plan’s medicine list and advance approval process still applied.

Tell the health plan the drug name and the reason it would be prescribed. Ask about prior authorization, meaning the plan must agree to pay in advance.

Even for those other uses, your own plan might refuse payment.

### A separate program can help pay for weight-loss medicine

The hormone GLP-1 affects hunger and blood sugar; medicines copying it are often grouped under that name.

For some weight-loss medicines, Medicare offers a separate, temporary program: the GLP-1 Bridge. Both shots and pills are included.

The Bridge is for adults aged 18 or above with a qualifying Medicare drug plan. Weight and other health conditions also affect who can use it.

This program cannot be used by someone who has type 2 diabetes. For that condition, ask about payment through ordinary Part D. Another limit applies in 2026: a GLP-1 prescription paid by Part D that year prevents Bridge use during 2026.

These are some of the checks. Ask the person treating you to compare your health history and exact medicine with the full program rules before counting on this price.

Under the terms checked in September 2026, a month’s medicine costs $50 through the Bridge for someone who qualifies. July 1, 2026 was the opening date. December 31, 2027 is the planned end.

The Bridge has its own payment system outside your usual Part D drug insurance.

Under the September 2026 terms, paying the Bridge’s $50 charge leaves you no closer to Part D’s annual limit on your own drug spending.

The Bridge payment also leaves your Part D deductible unchanged. A deductible comes first: you pay that amount yourself before the plan begins sharing covered drug costs.

Medicare offers help with ordinary drug costs for people on low incomes. That help does not cut the Bridge charge of $50.

Use the official rules linked in the source notebook to check who qualifies and which medicines the program includes.

## Keep an exit question beside the total

“What do I still owe if I choose no medicine or leave the plan?” Ask it before entering payment details. Save the answer with the quote.

## A pause for plain words

Formulary

The medicine list used by a particular health plan for payment.

Prior authorization

The plan’s agreement to pay, requested before the prescription is filled.
